Laws introduced in April 2007, ensured that when a tenant pays their deposit to secure a tenancy, your landlord should secure the deposit in a certified deposit protection scheme; within 30 days of the date the deposit was provided by the tenant to the landlord.
There are three government backed deposit schemes:
1. Deposit Protection Service
2. My Deposits
3. Tenancy Deposit Scheme
If the Landlord has failed to protect the deposit in a Tenancy Deposit Scheme, or has failed to disclose the information of where the deposit is being protected to the Tenant, the Landlord may find it difficult to evict the Tenant by using a Section 21 Notice.
If your landlord has failed to protect your deposit you may be entitled to compensation of up to 3 times the value of your deposit.
